Middle School Students

The middle school years in a student’s life are the educational foundation for high school and beyond. This period of your education allows you to consider in greater detail your interests, strengths, challenges, and possible career opportunities. Now is a good time to think about your future more seriously and consider colleges and careers that interest you.

In many cases, more personal freedom in choosing your classes and schedule are possible. Remember that colleges and universities may have minimum educational requirements for certain subjects such as math, science, English and foreign languages. Talk to your school counselor about class and career options!

A few items to consider might include:

  • What classes do you enjoy and interest you the most?
  • What are your extracurricular activities, both in school and outside of school?
  • Do you enjoy being around people or prefer a quieter surrounding?
  • Can you job shadow other people to learn more about their careers?
  • Do you prefer to work indoors or outside?
  • Can you volunteer to gain experience?

RUReadyND.com, formerly known as Bridges Guidance Central, is a software program provided by SLND. All North Dakota public and private middle schools and high schools have access to the career exploration, education planning and ACT test preparation tools offered through the online program. Check it out online or ask your school counselor for more information.
