Scholarships

Colleges/universities often have scholarships that are unique to their institutions. Below is a list of schools located in North Dakota. Click on the links to go to the scholarship section of their Web sites. If you are unable to click on the school’s name, they do not have a page specifically dedicated to scholarships. Please contact the school directly for more information.

Listed below are programs specific to North Dakota:

North Dakota Academic and Career & Technical Education Scholarships
Two new scholarship opportunities are available for high school seniors beginning with the 2009-10 graduating class. The North Dakota Academic Scholarship and the North Dakota Career and Technical Education Scholarship were authorized by the 2009 Legislature, in House Bill 1400, to encourage and reward high school students for taking more challenging course work in preparation for college and to prepare them for entering the workforce.

North Dakota Scholars Program
The North Dakota Scholars Program, a merit-based scholarship, provides approximately 40 to 45 new freshmen scholarships to North Dakota’s best and brightest high school graduates to encourage them to remain in North Dakota to obtain their post-secondary training. The North Dakota Scholars Scholarship is a full tuition scholarship for students attending North Dakota’s public and tribal colleges and a tuition scholarship equal to NDSU/UND’s tuition for students attending North Dakota’s private institutions. North Dakota State Student Incentive Grant (SSIG) Program
The SSIG Program provides approximately 7900-8500 non-repayable grants to North Dakota residents pursuing their undergraduate degree and who attend North Dakota's public, private, and tribal colleges. The purpose of this need-based grant is to assist students with their cost of attending a North Dakota post-secondary institution. A State Grant also reduces the amount of money a student needs to borrow for his or her education. Students apply for this grant by completing the FAFSA by March 15.

North Dakota Teacher Shortage Loan Forgiveness Program
The Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program will reduce student loan indebtedness by up to $1,000 per year, subject to a maximum of $3,000 for those who teach at a grade level or in a content area identified as a teacher shortage area by the superintendent of public instruction.

North Dakota Technology Occupations Student Loan Program
The Technology Occupations Student Loan Program will reduce student loan indebtedness by up to $1,000 per year, subject to a maximum of $3,000 for those who have graduated in a technology-related field and been employed in a technology occupation in North Dakota for one year.

Higher Education Resource Organization for Students (HEROS) Scholarship Program
This scholarship is available to students enrolled full-time in a North Dakota institute of higher education who has earned a minimum 3.00 GPA or better and who is an enrolled member of a tribe. Up to seven $100 scholarships are available: one per North Dakota reservation; one for any other federally recognized tribe; one for incoming freshman who have just recently graduated from high school; and one for a graduate student. Deadline date to apply is July 31.

Municipal Government Academy (MGA) Jan Jordan Scholarship Fund
One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student who meets these minimum qualifications. They must be a child or grandchild of a city employee or elected city official, 17 to 22 years old and a registered full-time student in an accredited ND university, college or vocational/technical certification program. All applications must be postmarked no later than Friday, March 12.

North Dakota Association of Counties (NDACo)
Two $1,000 scholarships awarded to children or grandchildren of county employees and appointed or elected county officials. Application deadline is generally early June.

North Dakota Education Association (NDEA) Scholarship
This scholarship assists students who want to enter the profession of teaching. One $500 scholarship is awarded annually upon the recommendation of the NDEA Foundation. The applicant must be an undergraduate student in good standing with a 3.00 GPA; must be enrolled in a North Dakota institution of higher education; must be enrolled in a teacher education program; and must be prepared in a professional manner. An application may be obtained from the ND Education Association, Box 5005, Bismarck, ND 58502-5005. Deadline date is March 15.

North Dakota Indian Scholarship Program
The North Dakota Indian Scholarship assists approximately 150 to 175 American Indian students each year obtain a college education by providing scholarships ranging in amounts from $500 to $2,000 per year.

North Dakota Parent Teachers Association (PTA) Scholarship
The ND Congress of Parents and Teachers sponsors the ND PTA Scholarship. Applicants must be in their sophomore or junior years and must apply by March 31. This is a $500 scholarship per 12-month period. The applicant must be a resident of North Dakota preparing to teach at the primary or secondary level. Applicants must write a response to the question: "What is your goal as a teacher and how do you assess your ability to achieve that goal?" Applications may be obtained by contacting the ND Congress of Parents and Teachers, State Office, 810 Divide Avenue, Bismarck, ND 58501.

North Dakota Women's Opportunity Scholarship Fund
The North Dakota Council on Abused Women's Services sponsors this scholarship. The applicant must be a North Dakota resident and enrolled in a North Dakota college; must be under the financial guidelines established for 125% of poverty; must have a completed application on file by June 15; must enroll full-time in an undergraduate academic degree or professional certification; and must submit three letters of reference for the scholarship. Applications may be requested from the North Dakota Council on Abused Women's Services, 418 E. Rosser #320, Bismarck, ND 58501. Scholarship recipients will be notified of scholarship awards in August.

Oban (Bill) Special Education Scholarship
This $500 scholarship will be awarded by the NDEA Foundation to an outstanding student who is preparing for a career in special education. To qualify, a student must be a full-time undergraduate student in a teacher education program, maintain a minimum 3.00 GPA; and maintain membership in the NEA Student Program. Deadline date to apply is March 15. Applications are available at The Bill Oban Special Education Scholarship; NDEA Foundation, PO Box 5005, Bismarck, ND 58502.
